Digital Scales, Precision Scales and Calibration Weights
This category contains digital scales and accessories for accurately weighing small quantities. Depending on availability, the selection includes compact pocket scales, precision scales, tabletop scales and calibration weights for checking and adjusting compatible models.
Many of our scales are made by DIPSE. The company has worked with digital weighing technology since 1992 and offers various models for portable and home use.
In summary: When choosing a digital scale, pay particular attention to its maximum capacity and display resolution. A scale with 0.01 g increments is suitable for smaller quantities, while models with a greater capacity commonly display in 0.1 g increments.
Which Digital Scale Is Right for You?
The best scale depends on the quantities you want to weigh and the required display resolution. A higher maximum capacity does not automatically mean that the scale provides a finer measurement. The relationship between capacity and division is what matters.
- Pocket scales: compact digital scales for travel and small quantities
- Precision scales: models with a fine display resolution, often in 0.01 g increments
- Tabletop scales: larger weighing platforms and a greater maximum capacity
- Calibration weights: defined test weights for checking and adjusting compatible scales
- Accessories: weighing trays, protective covers and other additions for selected models
Understanding Capacity and Display Resolution
The maximum capacity states the total weight that the scale can support. The division or resolution indicates the increments in which the result is displayed. A specification of 200 g × 0.01 g, for example, means that the scale can weigh up to 200 g and displays the result in increments of 0.01 g.
A fine resolution is important for particularly small quantities. Anyone using heavier containers or weighing larger amounts should instead check that the scale provides sufficient capacity and an appropriately sized weighing platform.
Useful Digital Scale Functions
Many digital scales include additional functions that make weighing more convenient. The available features depend on the individual model.
- Tare function: subtracts the weight of a container from the result
- Backlit display: makes the result easier to read in different lighting conditions
- Multiple weighing units: depending on the model, these may include grams, ounces, grains or carats
- Automatic shut-off: reduces battery consumption when the scale is not being used
- Counting function: allows compatible scales to count items of an identical weight
Checking a Scale with a Calibration Weight
A digital scale may deviate from its original measurement after extended use or transport. Models designed for adjustment can be checked and recalibrated using a suitable calibration weight.
Only use the weight specified in the operating instructions. A scale requiring a 100 g calibration weight should not be adjusted using a different weight. Calibration should be performed on a stable, level and vibration-free surface.
Tip: Place the scale on a solid and level surface and protect it from drafts, vibrations and significant temperature changes. This helps produce more consistent measurements.
Using and Storing a Digital Scale
Do not exceed the maximum capacity or drop heavy objects onto the weighing platform. Clean the surface according to the manufacturer’s instructions and protect the scale from moisture, dust and impacts.
Details about capacity, resolution, weighing units, power supply and the required calibration weight can be found in the individual product description.
