Lithium-ion batteries are used in most portable vaporizers and offer many advantages, such as high energy density (high cell voltage and capacity), no memory effect, and very low self-discharge at normal room temperatures.

Since these batteries require some care to deliver their best performance, we want to give you a few tips to help you get the maximum out of your batteries. Afterwards, we will address the most important questions regarding the use of lithium-ion batteries and vaporizers.

General information for handling lithium batteries

• Lithium-containing batteries are safe when handled properly

Batteries (even damaged ones) should not be disposed of in household waste. Dispose of old batteries properly in collection boxes at retailers (e.g., Verdampftnochmal) or collection points such as large supermarkets.

Important: Cover the terminals beforehand to prevent short circuits or use a protective case.

What many people don’t know: collected old batteries are exclusively sent for recycling. Valuable metals like nickel, cobalt, lithium, manganese, copper, iron, aluminum, and even silver can be recovered and reused as secondary raw materials.

What types of lithium batteries are available for vaporizers?

There are basically three types of lithium batteries used in almost all portable vaporizers:

The 18650 is the most common battery, used in most vaporizers and e-cigarettes. In addition, there is the 18350, which is about half the size of its bigger brother, and the 26650, slightly larger, but used less often. There are also many built-in batteries, which can come in almost any size or shape depending on the product in which they are used (vaporizer or electric car).

What should you consider when buying a battery?

Before purchasing a new battery, a few technical aspects should be considered: besides the capacity (specified in mAh), the maximum discharge current (specified in amperes) also plays an important role. The higher the capacity, the longer your battery lasts; the higher the amperage, the more power the battery delivers.

If the positive and negative terminals are connected by a conductive material, this can lead to discharge and, in the worst case, a short circuit.

• Excessive heat or cold can damage the batteries
• Protect from direct sunlight and moisture
• Store batteries in containers or protective cases when not in use
• Do not use batteries with damaged casings
• Never put loose batteries in your pocket with coins or keys
• Do not store batteries in a car
• Depending on usage and battery quality, we recommend replacing them every 12 months

Properly charging lithium-ion batteries

The lithium-ion batteries used in vaporizers do not have a memory effect, unlike some other batteries you might be familiar with. However, you should never fully discharge the battery (deep discharge), as this can permanently damage it over time.

Some models therefore include protection against deep discharge. To ensure your battery lasts as long as possible, we recommend keeping it between 20% and 90% charge.

How do I best charge my vaporizer’s battery?

Built-in Batteries

You can easily charge the built-in battery of your vaporizer using the included USB cable. Please try to use exactly this cable whenever possible, as not all USB cables are the same and manufacturers provide the correct one with the device.

Replaceable Batteries

Although almost all battery holders have a USB port that can be used to charge 18650 batteries, this should only be used as a last resort. Many vaporizer manufacturers recommend using an external charger, as batteries are charged more gently this way, which extends their lifespan. Additionally, you can adjust the charging current as needed.

When charging batteries in a charger or even in the vaporizer, do not leave them unattended. The reason is the same as why you wouldn’t start the washing machine and leave the house. Accidents can always happen. Insurance companies are especially strict in such cases, as they may refuse payment.

Battery pairing: What does it mean?

This means using the paired batteries as a single unit so that they always go through the same number of charge and discharge cycles, resulting in almost equal aging. • Is the battery new and of high quality?
• Is the battery (almost) fully charged?
• What temperature is used in the vaporizer? Higher temperatures drain the battery faster
• Inhalation technique (long or short draws) also affects battery life per cycle
• Type and model of the vaporizer, as convection consumes more power than, for example, conduction
• Some vaporizers use Bluetooth connectivity, which also affects battery performance
