PAX 4: Update of a Proven Concept
For over a decade, PAX has defined the ultra-portable premium vaporizer segment. While the PAX Mini 2 and the PAX Plus have already established themselves as absolute market leaders in discretion and design, the PAX FOUR now goes one decisive step further. It retains the familiar look but focuses entirely on optimizing its inner values.
The housing has become slightly larger compared to the PAX Plus. However, those who love the minimalist, buttonless design will get exactly what they expect. The decisive progress takes place under the hood: here, PAX has responded with a technical update to feedback from the global community to optimize performance without abandoning the familiar design language.
Design and First Impression
As usual, PAX stays true to its design roots. The PAX FOUR is compact, ergonomic, and avoids unnecessary buttons on the outside. The housing consists of high-quality, anodized aluminum. With a weight of about 125 g, the device feels high-quality in the hand but disappears almost invisibly into the palm when needed.

New, however, is the USB-C port on the side, as we already know from the PAX Flow. While we now have to do without the magnetic charging cable, this has the advantage that we can use any standard USB-C cable for charging.
Operation is still handled via the mouthpiece and the four-petaled LED indicator, which communicates the status of the device (heating, status, battery level) in different colors.
The Technology: Smart-Hybrid Heating System
Probably the biggest innovation compared to the predecessors is the heating system. While earlier models primarily relied on conduction (heat through direct contact), the PAX 4 now utilizes a Smart-Hybrid heating system.

Conduction + Convection = Performance and Aroma
By combining conduction and convection, the plant material is extracted very evenly. The flavor is clearly present and free from disturbing side aromas. The PAX 4 does this surprisingly well, as the nuances of the herbs can be clearly tasted over a longer period during the session. This applies not only to the first puff, after which the taste usually becomes a bit dull.
The heating chamber is generously sized with a capacity of approx. 0.3 g of herbs, which is easily enough for a long session. But one doesn’t always want to vaporize the full amount.
Can the PAX FOUR also vaporize smaller amounts effectively?
To test this, I filled the chamber with only a small amount of herbs. Just enough so that the bottom is covered, and very loosely without pressing the herbs down. I then tested this amount on level three and level four. I was very surprised at how well it worked.
Dense vapor from the first puff! Naturally a bit less than with a full chamber, but still very dense and intense. I didn’t get the feeling that the vapor quality was too “airy,” which pleasantly surprised me. Here, the Smart-Hybrid heating system does an excellent job. The AVB (Already Vaped Bud) is roasted very evenly.
- Constant Vapor Quality: The flavor remains intense, and vapor production stays consistently high until the end of the session.
- No More “Stirring”: Thanks to hybrid technology, the herbs in the chamber no longer need to be stirred during the session. The heat penetrates the material evenly from all sides.
- Chamber Flexibility: A huge advantage for all “microdosers”: the heating chamber has been optimized to function excellently even with a few loosely filled herbs. You no longer necessarily have to pack the chamber tightly to achieve efficient vaporization.
Optimized Airflow
A common criticism of older models was the high draw resistance. With the PAX FOUR, the airflow has been noticeably optimized. The new design allows for an airflow that feels somewhat freer. This is particularly important for users who like to combine their vaporizer with a water filter (bong). And that works very well with the PAX FOUR and the adapter.

On the water filter, it delivers dense vapor clouds right from the first puff. Even with longer draws, the oven does not cool down and maintains a consistently high temperature. However, this characteristic might not appeal as much to a certain group of users.
Draw Technique: MTL vs. Deep Inhale
The PAX FOUR is certainly suitable for longer, deeper draws. Conversely, those who vaporize exclusively with direct lung inhales (DTL) can bring the device to overheat after a few minutes. This is signaled to you via vibration and the LED display. In this case, the vaporizer shuts off as a safety precaution, and you must wait a moment until it has cooled down again.
Its true strength lies elsewhere: The PAX FOUR performs best with MTL draws (Mouth-to-Lung), i.e., short, gentle puffs similar to those from a conventional cigarette. This technique maximizes vapor density while simultaneously preserving the battery.
Battery and Connectivity: Finally USB-C
A long-awaited feature finally arrives: The PAX FOUR says goodbye to the proprietary charging pin and relies on USB-C Fast Charge.
- Battery Capacity: The internal 2800 mAh battery provides endurance throughout the day (approx. 6–8 sessions per charge).
- Charging Time: Thanks to USB-C, the device is quickly ready for use again. In about 60 minutes, the battery is charged from 0 to 100%.
Cleaning and Maintenance

As is typical for PAX, cleaning is straightforward:
- Mouthpiece and Chamber: Simply clean with an alcohol-soaked cloth or cotton swab.
- Vapor Path: You can quickly pull the included brush or pipe cleaners and some isopropanol through the air duct.
- 3D Oven Screens: These can be easily pushed out with the brush and reinserted with the tool.
This is enough to permanently maintain pure flavor and ensure optimal performance.
Critical Observations
Despite its premium positioning, there are some points you should consider before purchasing. Real-world tests revealed two points of criticism:
- 1. Heating Time
Anyone used to the rapid 15–20 seconds of modern convection vaporizers will have to adjust. With the PAX FOUR, the heating time takes a bit longer; on average, you can expect approx. one minute until the haptic feedback signals readiness. So, a bit of patience is required here.
The PAX FOUR is so compact that you can simply turn it on in your pants or jacket pocket. You don’t have to hold it in your hand while it heats up. The vibration is strong enough to reliably feel when the session can begin.
- 2. Thermals and Heat Development
The compact design takes its toll on heat dissipation.
- Housing Temperature: The device becomes very warm, which can become almost uncomfortable in the hand during longer sessions at high temperature ranges. This particularly affects the lower part of the device.
- Auto-Shutoff: During very intensive use at the highest setting, it occasionally happens that the PAX FOUR shuts off due to overheating to protect the electronics. Those who like to “chain-vape” should therefore stick to level 2 or 3.
